Soroca Fortress

A historic fort in the Republic of Moldova, in the modern-day city of Soroca.
 It is known for its well-preserved stronghold, established by the Moldavian Prince Stephen the Great (Romanian: Ştefan cel Mare) in 1499.

The original wooden fort, which defended a ford over the Dniester (Romanian: Nistru), was an important link in the chain of fortifications which comprised four forts (e.g. Akkerman and Khotin) on the Dniester, two forts on the Danube and three forts on the north border of medieval Moldova. Between 1543 and 1546 under the rule of Petru Rareş, the fortress was rebuilt in stone as a perfect circle with five bastions situated at equal distances.

This is where the flamboyantly bearded ìGypsy Kingî presides over his community from his grand Moorish inspired palace headquarters. Pictures show how other architectural highlights from this gypsy (Roma) capital with a population of 37,000 include the American White House, the Russian Bolshoi theatre and the Vaticanís St Paulís Church ñ all private homes financed by leading members of the community keen to flaunt their wealth. Journalist Andrei Ghihan (31) travelled to Soroca or ìGypsy Hillî as it is known locally, in the north of the Eastern European nation of Moldova ñ where he was welcomed by Gypsy King Arthur ìBaronî Cerari at this home. Video footage shows Arthur serenading Andrei with a traditional song accompanied with his accordion.
The Gipsy Hill  

After the excursion at Soroca Fortress, you will visit the Gypsy Hill (gypsy-style chateaux being an imitation of famous buildings, such as the Capitol building in Washington and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow).

The Gypsy houses impress by their variety, diversity of colors, contrasts, and luxury. About 20 hundred Gypsies live in Soroca.

The Candle of Gratitude

Growing from the depths of our past, is a tribute to all the anonymous heroes who have preserved the culture, language and history of Moldova in the polychrome palette of human civilization. The Candle of Gratitude – this monument erected on the rock and which crowns this rock, above the old Dniester, on the edge of Soroca promontory. The monument is about 30 m high and 564 steps from the base of the gorge to the top.
